World-famous South Andros Island has some of the most productive, scenic flats in the Bahamas with a good population of Bonefish in the 4-6lb range. Including an array of inland channels, creeks and turtle grass habitat that is unpressured, the west side of the Island regularly provides clients with genuine shots at double-figure fish.
Bair’s Lodge was established in the late ’80s, offering fine guiding, unpretentious accommodation and great service which has allowed it to remain one of the most respected fly fishing lodges in the region.
Perfectly located on the north-eastern side of the island between Deep Creek and Little Creek you have quick access to the flats while being able to retreat to the comforts of the lodge, and delicious a la carte meals served at the end of each day.
Bair’s Lodge offers deluxe ocean-side lodgings in an attractive plantation-style building surrounded by tropical flowers and palm trees. Combined with courteous, attentive hospitality, great food and fly fishing the lodge ticks a lot of boxes.
The bright, airy lodge is nestled on a sparkling white sandy beach with good amenities, laundry service and air-conditioning. All bedrooms are clean and comfortable, with soft cotton sheets, tropical weight duvets and hot showers. There is plenty of storage space and electricity outlets to recharge phones and camera batteries. All bedrooms include en-suite bathrooms and all open out onto an ocean-facing verandah. Handy rod racks and hose beside the outdoor showers provide a great facility for washing down your tackle on returning from a day’s fishing.
The living room and dining areas face the ocean with comfortable sofas, books and relaxed island atmosphere. The lodge dining is based upon Bahamian specialties with a focus on magnificent fresh seafood, with a fully stocked bar and a guest office that includes telephone facilities and a computer station with internet access. There is also a Satellite TV that allows you to catch up on news and sports during cocktail hour, and fly-tying room.
Outside, there are plenty of lounge chairs and hammocks as well as benches and tables where you can enjoy a coffee or a beer.
Bair’s Lodge is perfect for small fishing groups with a maximum of ten anglers, which enables the resort to really focus on providing a top level of service. This is noted by the number of repeat visits to the lodge and bookings well in advance is highly advised. The combination of great lodging and hospitality, combined with huge expanses of prime Bonefishing flats is hard to beat.
The lodge has all the facilities that a visiting angler needs, including a tackle-shop, with gear rental available if required on a loan basis.
The Bahamas and Andros are often referred to as the ‘Bonefishing Capital’ of the world with good reason. The south and west-side flats are remote and renowned for large, unpressured Bonefish which can be targeted on hard, expansive white flats. They are perfect for wading and provide ample room to stalk cruising and tailing Bones, or you can target them from the skiff in the mangrove lagoons—expertly maneuvered into range by one of the Bair’s professional guides.
The variety of fishing locations is also an advantage, with Deep Creek and Little Creek offering good protection and shelter than the ocean side flats, should the wind pick up. This variety bolstered by some of the most consistent fishing in the Bahamas chain is why South Andros is considered the ‘Bonefishing Capital’ of the world.
Bair’s guests can also target the elusive Permit and the occasional Tarpon and Snook—making a Grand Slam day within reach for many accomplished fly-fishers. The expert guides that work from the lodge have an intimate knowledge of the surrounding waters and can advise on the techniques required to ensure your best chance of hooking a large Bonefish.
A typical day on the water starts with skiffs leaving the dock around 8:00 am and finishes at 4:00 pm, but this can vary to suit conditions. Clearly, if fishing unguided, you can suit yourself. Lunches are packed just after breakfast and taken out on the water. Anglers fish from 16-foot Dolphin Super Skiffs, complete with poling platforms, 85 HP Yamaha outboards, and spacious casting decks outfitted with angler lean bars.
In addition to the Bonefishing, guests can also pre-arrange some Bluewater fly fishing off-shore, to target Wahoo, Tuna, Snapper, Mahi Mahi and other species.
As per all Fly Odyssey bookings, we will provide a comprehensive and detailed pre-trip fly fishing guide and advise of travel requirements prior to your departure.
