The beautiful town of Bled, on the shores of its stunning namesake, Lake Bled, and overlooked by its majestic medieval castle, provides a superb base to explore the region’s waters.
Fly fishing opportunities for Trout and Grayling are offered in a variety of waterways including freestone rivers and meandering chalk streams all within easy reach of the town.
Many accommodation options and activities ensure that both anglers and non-anglers can experience the best of this region, with fine architecture, great food, wine, and hospitality.
Fly Odyssey has a select range of accommodation options on Lake Bled and the surrounding district. This includes luxury lakeside villas, boutique hotels, lodges, and private residences.
WIFI is available in most hotels and B&Bs.
These are the headwaters of the Sava River which is lake-fed and offers thirty-two kilometres of fast alpine water. The Sava Bohinjka is a beautiful river with very clear water. In parts, it appears emerald green and combined with the surrounding mountains and meadowland, this is a really beautiful river to fish. The water clarity is simply staggering compared to some of the UK chalk streams, which makes sight-fishing a real joy.
The banks’ vegetation, trees, and flowers, all provide great fly life and at times with heavy hatches of flies. The dry fly fishing can be very exciting with Rainbows, Browns, and Grayling all feeding under the bankside vegetation. However, it’s the nymph that probably catches more fish, and it is worth taking some very heavy nymphs to get down in the deep fast pools.
Whilst many of the Rainbow Trout have been stocked over the years it is worth noting that they do breed in the river and there is a growing population of wild Rainbows. Combine this with the resident Huchen (when in season,) the migratory Salmonode from the Danube (which can be very big), there is a lot to fish for in the river, making for an exciting and different experience that river-fishermen will really understand and appreciate. From deep alpine gorges to more open slower flowing pools and deeps in the meadowland, there is plenty of different water to choose from where you can test your skills whatever your ability, level of expertise and preferences.
This is not a complicated river to fish. The access is generally good and wading is trouble-free for the most part. We would advise all anglers to take their own equipment—rods, reels, lines, waders, boots, etc. Rods in the 3-6# with mostly floating lines should be adequate. De-barbed hooks are preferred.
Fly direct to Ljubljana and then take a one-hour (thirty-six kilometres) scenic drive to the river lodge/hotel.
