The Breiddalsa River is one of Iceland’s most beautiful salmon rivers. Located in the north-east of the country, this river gives fly-fishermen the chance to catch huge Salmon weighing up to 28 pounds. Each season, many fish weighing over 20 pounds are caught.
A cosy lodge is situated on the banks of the Breiddalsa River, providing guests with breathtaking views of the river as well as the surrounding valley with its high mountain peaks.
The lodge is a comfortable base for fly fishing, allowing anglers to rest after enjoying a day on the river. Those who don’t fish can also relax and take in the scenic and remote surrounds.
The Breiddalsa Fishing Lodge is located close to the banks of the Breiddalsa and has spectacular views over the river, surrounding mountains and landscape. The lodge has very comfortable accommodation for eight anglers staying in twin rooms with en-suite facilities, TV and internet connections.
There is plenty of room for storing all your fishing gear. There is a comfortable lounge, a dining room and a large feature fireplace. There is also a sauna and jacuzzi in which to relax.
Non-fishing guests can enjoy the peace and tranquility of the area in complete privacy.
WIFI is available at the Breiddalsa Fishing Lodge, but you will need to bring your laptop or tablet.
Fly fishing the Breiddalsa River takes you to one the best big Salmon rivers in Iceland. Located in the north-eastern corner of Iceland, the Breiddalsa River is some six hundred and ten kilometres east of Reykjavik. It produces huge Salmon with the largest fish landed being 28 lbs and a large number of fish exceeding 20 lbs each season. This river will produce 30 lbs Salmon in the near future. There is no other river in Iceland that can match the numbers of 2SW fish returning to the Breiddalsa river.
There is also excellent Brown Trout fishing on the upper and lower sections of the river, with the chance of a Sea Trout and Sea-Run Arctic Char. Altogether the Char and Trout beats are about twelve kilometres long, giving each rod approximately two kilometres of varied fishing space.
The fishing is done with six rods from 1st May to 1st July but only three from 1st July to 30th September. Average catches are around three hundred Char and three hundred Brown Trout with the average size being around 1 kg. When the Salmon season starts in July, it is not uncommon for Trout anglers fishing the Trout beat to catch a Salmon. The prime time for the Brown Trout is early in the season and then again late in the season for Sea Trout. The prime time for the Char is May to late July.
Streamer patterns and midge imitations work well for the Trout and the Char in the deep channels. In the estuary, small shrimp patterns work well along with streamer patterns.
We suggest 4-6# rods, and we would also advise all anglers to bring along all the tackle they need for their trip. Layered clothing is recommended due to the nature of the changeable weather.
Passport with a minimum of six months validity and photo ID to purchase a fishing licence. No Visa required.
Fly direct to Reykjavik and take an internal sixty-minute flight to Egillstadir where you will be met by a lodge representative/ host and taken on a one-hour drive to the lodge.
