Casa Blanca lodge and sister lodge Playa Blanca further south on Yucatan Peninsula are two of the finest fly fishing lodges in Mexico.
Casa Blanca is located on the remote southern end of Ascension Bay, on the northern tip of Punta Pajaros with fantastic, quick access to the flats each day.
The impressive lodge has excellent ocean views, while the food, service and guide team are all first class. With a wide variety of wildlife interactions, private pier and Mayan ruins on the small island spit, a trip to Casa Blanca will not disappoint.
Big Permit, Tarpon and good numbers of Bonefish that are often less pressured than the northern regions of Ascension Bay, it’s one of the world’s best destinations for saltwater fly fishing and securing a Grand Slam.
Casa Blanca is a well-appointed, refined fly fishing lodge that is managed by excellent staff and attentive guides, with large comfortable air-conditioned rooms, and fantastic cuisine with an emphasis on local seafood.
In the open-air main lodge, you will find comfortable lounging chairs and a fully stocked bar. After a long day on the flats, recount your adventures to fellow anglers while sipping an ice-cold beverage and enjoying the daily selection of ‘botanas’ (snacks) prepared fresh every afternoon. After a shower, make your way to the dining room to enjoy the chef’s daily specialty.
The food at Casa Blanca rivals any of the best restaurants on the Mayan Riviera. The menu places emphasis on fresh, creative and skillfully prepared dishes with a Yucatan flare, presented to please your eye as well as your palate. All meals are served in the lodge’s waterfront dining room, at beautifully set tables, by professionally trained staff.
Breakfast is a favourite meal at Casa Blanca. The table is always set with strong coffee and fresh-squeezed orange juice and platters of assorted tropical fruits and cereals. The chefs are happy to prepare any breakfast dish to order, from pancakes and French toast to scrambled eggs and omelette’s and will accommodate any special dietary requirements.
For anglers heading out to a full fishing day, an extensive lunch buffet is prepared each morning. Guests staying in for the day or participating in non-angling activities may choose from a lunch of their choice served in the dining room, or a tailor-made picnic basket to be enjoyed outdoors.
Each afternoon after guests return from fishing, the chef prepares tasty appetizers to pair with a cold beer or cocktail. The acclaimed dinners are three-course meals taken from the chef’s revolving menu. Everything is made from scratch daily, from bread and specialty salsas to soups and desserts.
For the non-fisher, activities range from Mayan Ruin tours, snorkelling, kayaking, cycling, hiking/walking along the beaches and eco-tours or simply go for a swim and relax on the beach.
Casa Blanca is remote but not disconnected. The main lodge has wireless Internet for guest use. There is no regular telephone service, but satellite phones are available for a small fee.
Casa Blanca is an angler’s paradise. Situated on the northern tip of Punta Pajaros with immediate access to the prime fishing areas of Ascension Bay, there is also excellent access to the Santa Rosa channels and lagoons brimming with large bonefish, and tarpon.
There are numerous perfect bonefish flats with fish typically two to five pounds in weight, but larger specimens are present and caught weighing over six pounds. It is a great destination for fly-fishermen looking to experience the joys of wading the flats and fly fishing to a diverse range of species that also includes Permit, Horse-eye and Jack Crevalle, Snook and Barracuda in a stunning location.
The permit water is endless, and the creek and river inlets in the back of the bay can keep a snook and tarpon fisherman busy for days. The expansive mangrove estuary of Ascension Bay, known as the Santa Rosa Lagoon, lies due west of Punta Pajaros. A massive system of linked small and medium lagoons, Santa Rosa, is an important area to the ecosystem, harbouring and nurturing juvenile fish and other sea-life.
Fishing is endless in this beautiful backcountry. There is an impressive number of juvenile Tarpon, some up to fifty pounds, as well as some of the area’s larger Bonefish specimens, Barracuda and Snook.
Santa Rosa offers excellent protection from the wind and is a great option for those tougher days on the flats. Santa Rosa is also a wonderful place for wildlife viewing, home to amazing birds like the Boat-Billed Heron, Roseate Spoonbill, Reddish Egret, Tiger Heron, and Pygmy Kingfisher.
A typical day starts with breakfast around 7:00 am and then ready to leave the lodge with your guides (all of whom speak good English) and gear for an 8:00 am start from the quay. Fishing grounds can be anything from a ten to a forty-five-minute run, returning to the lodge at around 4 pm.
Casa Blanca Lodge uses 17-foot Dolphin Super-Skiffs, smaller and considerably more maneuverable than the traditional pangas used elsewhere in Mexico, fitted with 50hp Four-Stroke engines. The skiffs also have a lean bar capability for added stability. VHF radio and all safety kit are onboard along with well-maintained engines to ensure fishing guests’ safety.
Much of the fishing is from skiffs depending on the target fish, however, there are plenty of opportunities to walk and wade.
As per all Fly Odyssey bookings, you will be provided with a comprehensive and detailed pre-trip fly fishing guide, prior to your departure.
The lodge is easily accessible via Cancun, which is a major hub for US and European flights daily and has a great range of resort and hotel accommodation available to bookend your fly fishing time in Mexico.
From Cancun, Casa & Playa Blanca will provide an air charter, which will fly you directly to the lodge. Guests must plan to arrive in Cancun no later than 2 P.M. and schedule their return flight no earlier than 11 a.m, in order to make connections with the air charter.
