Cayo Cruz and Cayo Romano are located off the north-eastern shore of Cuba and southern side of the Bahamas, encompassing a vast system of flats and lagoons perfect for wading with good numbers of large Permit, Tarpon and Bonefish available.
Commercial fishing is prohibited in this pristine ecosystem ensuring sport fishermen a virtually untouched fishing ground with many other species including Snook, Jacks, Snapper and Barracuda.
Encompassing over 360 square kilometers of fishing grounds, serviced by a fleet of Dolphin Skiffs the varied terrain includes bays, small islands, open flats and sheltered areas, with a range of very good accommodation options close by.
Hotel Valentin offers all modern amenities including luxury hotel suite options, with the waiting skiffs at the dock only a short stroll away each morning making it a perfect destination for small groups and couples.
The recently opened hotel Valentin is an all-inclusive adults-only resort situated with ocean views and a wide range of amenities perfect for your stay. There are five restaurants and several bars, with evening entertainment, three pools and only a short walk to the beach and dock where the awaiting skiffs depart each day.
Meals are varied with plenty of options including Italian, Seafood, Mexican and Caribbean influences. The bars naturally have a good selection of Cuban Rums, Wines and Cigars, while the infinity pools are a great place to unwind after a long day on the water.
Massage services are available, with Wi-Fi and laundry services also available for your stay. The beaches have a variety of non-motorised watercraft, and with six different room classes, it caters for all to ensure a comfortable stay.
The fishing area around Cayo Cruz and Cayo Romano is over three hundred and sixty-six square kilometres in size, with a huge variety of water to fish throughout the sheltered bays between the mainland and the islands themselves, as well as the ocean side channels and numerous flats which is great Permit and Bonefish habitat. Permit are typically in the seven to fifteen pound range with fish in excess of twenty through to thirty pounds not uncommon.
Bonefish numbers are good with fish in the 2-4lb class typically found, with shots at larger fish had each day to in excess of seven pounds. Tarpon is seasonally available with migratory and resident fish between thirty and eighty pounds in weight, typically on the ocean side channels and feeding lanes.
Fishing from Dolphin Skiffs equipped with 60/70 Hp engines, the travel time to the fishing grounds is typically between fifteen and thirty-five minutes, weather permitting. While the eastern side of Cuba can be windy at times, the fishery has the advantage of numerous sheltered areas and relatively deep flats in some areas which provide good access throughout the year. Seasonally, the fishing can vary:
A typical day starts after breakfast with a five-minute walk to the marina from the hotel where you meet with your guide and skiff at around 8 am. A packed lunch is provided for your day out on the water. Returning around 5:00 pm. This can vary, depending on the guides’ advice.
We would advise all anglers to bring along their own equipment rods, reels, lines, flies, wading boots, polarized glasses etc. and any spares that you might need. There are some spare rods but if possible, bring all your own gear.
As per all bookings, we will provide a detailed pre-trip guide prior to your departure.
