Home to the big Bonefish and Giant Trevally Aitutaki is famous for, continued management plans will ensure that this fishery continues to go from strength to strength. Throw in a tropical lagoon setting that is renowned as being one of the most picturesque in the world, top-class guides and specialist flats boats and you have the making of a great Fly Fishing holiday destination.
Perfect for couples and small groups, Aitutaki is most famous for its magnificent coral lagoon, a highlight of any visit to the Cook Islands, and undoubtedly one of the most memorable sights in the South Pacific. It’s a great destination to combine some flats fishing to double-figure Bonefish and huge Giant Trevally, while also offering a range of non-angling activities, dining options and beautiful beaches.
Partners can join you on the boat each day, get dropped off on a secluded beach, go snorkelling, visit the day spa or simply relax in the comforts of your lodging while you are out on the water. Our accommodation preferences mean that you can get picked up by boat from your doorstep each day, and maximise your enjoyment of being on Aitutaki – one of the world’s most beautiful islands.
Aitutaki is blessed with a broad range of accommodation options on the Island, both on the ocean reef and lagoon sides of the Atoll to suit any budget or preferences.
This includes private pool villas, houses, resorts and bungalow accommodation, each with their own unique advantages and suitability for couples, families or small groups. Or for the premier five-star Island experience, luxuriously appointed bungalows and villas are also available with panoramic ocean views.
Fly Odyssey has been sending clients to Aitutaki for many years now and we have an intimate understanding of the seasonal availability, including volume pricing and specials that we can offer our clients as a part of any fly fishing or holiday package.
This includes comprehensive pre-trip information around dining options and non-angling activities, as well as arranging personalised collections by boat from your own beach each day which is available at some select locations. In addition, some accommodation options also have good access to flats and swimming beaches, which are perfect for your non-fishing days, while others have handy access to day spa facilities, fine dining and great coffee.
In addition to your domestic flights to Aitutaki, we arrange all return airport transfers, including accommodation and bespoke itineraries through Rarotonga and Auckland.
Fly Odyssey has teamed up with Itu and Kaleena Davey, his family and team of guides for many years. We can provide you with selected availability to fly fish Aitutaki over the best tides and moon phases throughout the year.
This includes fly fishing and lodging packages where you will have the flexibility to fish the best five days throughout the week, including a mixture of flats and Bluewater fly fishing if you desire. The contingency days we build into our itineraries ensure that you are well placed to maximise your fly fishing and holiday time when there.
Catering for up-to 6 fly-anglers or couples (2 per boat), you will chase Bonefish, Giant and Bluefin Trevally while being guided by the best eyes on the Island. Non-anglers can also head out for the day with a range of Island beaches to spend time at including the famous one-foot Island where you will have lunch daily and can hand feed and swim with huge Giant Trevally.
If you specifically want to target Giant Trevally, then this can also be tailored for you around key times of the year, month and locations, again to maximise your experience on Aitutaki.
With around 50km2 of waters to explore, the small islands fringing the lagoon boast extensive sand and coral rubble flats providing an ideal habitat to Polaroid cruising fish. Weather permitting, you will also have the opportunity to head out wide and chase Tuna, Mahi Mahi and fish the offshore reefs.
With collection from your accommodation each morning, the weekly fishing schedule can be tailored to suit, and generally involves a mixture of wading the flats on foot as well as from the skiff on the deeper drop-offs. Bonefish typically range from 4-8lb’s on the flats with good numbers of larger fish also while GT’s to 40kg’s are not uncommon.
Non-anglers or partners can also experience fishing for bonefish and trevally by drifting the “milk” throughout the deeper section of the lagoon on sinking lines for schooled bonefish. While not classical Fly Fishing, it is still guaranteed fun and a great opportunity to land a double-figure fish.
Sunday is a family day on the Island which will give you a day to relax and unwind, with a number of Island attractions to visit including the Maunga Pu Summit, markets, various day spa’s or if you wish to keep fishing we can recommend a number of self-guided flats and areas to target.
Glass bottom boat tours are also available while several of the resorts on the Island have great Day Spa facilities. Transport around the Island is generally on a Moped (Small motorbike) which can be used to explore the Island and various restaurants bars and café’s nearby.
As per all Fly Odyssey bookings, will provide a comprehensive & detailed pre-trip fly fishing guide, prior to your departure.
