Located in southern Belize, the Copal Tree Lodge, formerly “Belcampo” is a unique resort set on 12,000 acres of land in tropical jungle. This remarkable lodge is one of a handful of lodges to be part of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World which allow guests to experience the majestic scenery while helping conserve the environment for generations to come.
The lodge is situated above the Rio Grande River, and a short boat ride from the Caribbean Sea and this unique location allows anglers to fish both rivers and mangroves as well as head out to fish the flats and the pristine marine reserves and national parks.
Adventures abound at Belcampo for non-anglers making it a unique and rewarding destination for the whole family. Bird watching, snorkelling, cultural experiences, agritourism, an exquisite farm to table foodie experience and children’s activities are just some of the many activities on offer at this special place.
Copal Tree Lodge is situated on the southern tip of Belize, just north of Punta Gorda. This area receives little publicity about the fantastic unspoilt eco-system and jungle that surrounds this region. CTL is ideally located to offer a fishing and non-fishing adventure holiday for singles or the entire family.
Accommodation is in one of the sixteen beautifully built, comfortable cabinas. They all have air-conditioning and either a large single or twin beds, private en-suite bathrooms and showers and a large deck overlooking the jungle canopy.
Additional amenities include a spa, swimming pool, access to mountain bikes, kayaks and hiking trails.
Dining at CTL is gourmet style with some of the best-prepared cuisine in Belize. The kitchen team work hard to present a mix of Belizean dishes fused with American cuisine. Much of the food is produced on the farm at the resort with the best ingredients and local seafood, meats, fresh fruit and vegetables.
There is also a well-stocked bar and cool beers always available as well as a range of local spirits and fruit juices/soft drinks.
For the non-fisher, the list of activities is vast: from kayaking and canoeing to bird-watching and jungle tours, nature trails and hiking, river excursions and snorkelling.
There is WIFI at Copal Tree Lodge.
Perched above the Rio Grande River and just a short boat ride from the Caribbean Sea, Belcampo Belize is a fly fisher’s paradise. Cast for Tarpon and Snook on the river and in the mangroves, fish the flats for Permit, or when the weather permits, head out to the white sand beaches of the Sapodilla Cayes for Bonefish which are mostly around two to three pounds in weight but with larger fish in the five-pound range also present. The majority of the fishing takes place in protected marine reserves and national parks.
The Permit flats are about a forty-five minute’s boat ride from the resort. Clearly, the river and mangrove fishing are much closer and easily accessible from the resort. In the rivers around Punta Gorda Tarpon range from ten to fifty pounds in weight and there are plenty of Snook and Jacks. It is quite common to literally see hundreds of Permit in one day and have several shots at them.
Southern Belize is best known as a world-renowned Permit territory, and while most anglers who visit the region are intermediate to advanced, expert guides also accommodate beginners for a one-of-a-kind fishing experience. Belcampo’s guides are all locals of the southern Belize region and are happy to accommodate your fishing preference and style. They are extremely patient and professional and understand this is your trip.
The guides use the 23ft super Pangas that are comfortable and very stable as well as being capable of getting into skinny water. We would advise all anglers to bring their own equipment rods, reels, lines, flies, wading boots etc. There is a gift shop at the resort that has a limited selection of flies and rental equipment in case you forget something or need spares.
There is no typical day at the lodge, however, it starts after breakfast when you leave the dock around 8:00 am and return after a full day out around 5:00 pm. However, this will change depending on tides and conditions, so be flexible to maximise the fishing. The guides will advise.
Most of the fishing is from the boat, but there are some flats that allow for walking and wading.
