Tasmania’s premier Fly Fishing retreat, Currawong Lakes Lodge is an exclusive private estate of 2000 acres nestled amongst the State Forest of Tasmania’s East Coast Highlands. Offering year-round sporting pursuits, the large Currawong Lake, Long Marsh Lake, and Lake Macquarie, are home to a carefully managed rainbow and brown trout fishery.
The three lakes provide outstanding Fly Fishing with typical Tasmanian insect life providing hatches throughout the year, where fish can be landed on both dry fly, wets, and nymphs seasonally. Fish range from 2-5lb’s which can be on a professionally guided or self-guided basis each day.
The lodge is perfectly situated with a large stone wood fire in the lounge, local timber construction, fine furnishings, and floor to ceiling glass providing stunning views over the lake at the end of a relaxing day on the water. The expansive deck is perfect for taking in the landscape, with prolific bird and wildlife complemented by three bedrooms, and kitchen ideal for small group stays.
Also located on the property is a world-class clay shooting range available for use for licensed and un-licensed shooters. Beretta under and over shotguns are complimentary with your stay, while a four-bedroom hunters cabin and very well-appointed bush cabins are also available.
The 50 Acre, Long Marsh Lake is home to the main Lodge, situated among native trees with a perfect view over the water to the hills beyond. Quiet and peaceful the relaxing retreat has been designed and built using local stone and timbers milled from the estate, perfect for a long weekend or mid-week stay.
The large central living area and lounge overlooks the lake, with a leather lounge, wood fire, reading areas, and a beautifully appointed kitchen for self-catering ideal for couples or groups of six. The three queen bedrooms are well furnished with an en-suite and second bathroom, while the large outdoor deck is ideal for entertaining. A wood-fired pizza oven and bbq facilities outside are ideal for the warmer months while watching rising trout as the sunsets over the lake each day.
For a more intimate setting, the two-bedroom Bush Cabins have a range of sleeping options from queen beds to bunks. Each cabin has a full kitchen with dining and lounge areas, TVs, DVDs, and wood fires. Each cabin has a timber deck with outdoor seating and a BBQ to take advantage of the views.
Also located on the 2000 Acre private property, on the shores of Long Marsh Lake, the four-bedroom hunter’s cabin provides flexible accommodation for up-to 8 people.
The trout population including wild Brown and Rainbow trout are carefully managed to provide excellent numbers of 2-5lb fish, with trophy specimens also available between the three lakes. These very well-conditioned fish are feisty and put up a great fight, with Currawong (50 acres) Long Marsh (50 acres), and Macquarie (10 acres) all fly-only waters.
The arrival of warmer Spring weather in September and October marks the start of the season, with hatches of a variety of insects commencing. Tailing fish in the margins feature early in the season, while the Fly Fishing on offer can be sensational, with rising and leaping fish to target as the season progresses. Afternoon Red Spinner hatches can be prolific while Blue Damsels and Mudeyes also hatch in large numbers as Summer approaches.
Mayfly duns and Caddis are also present with emergers and dry-fly fishing through to March the standout method on a variety of patterns each day. In the winter months, midge and streamer patterns feature, while fish also feed on terrestrials including frogs and beetles throughout the year.
Each lake is ideally suited to fishing the margins, while float tubes are also available for use to explore the vast weed beds and wooded structure out wider.
Fly Fishing at Currawong Lakes can be done on a self-guided basis or a professional guide can be arranged to meet you in the morning and take you out for a day with all the patterns needed for a great day’s fishing and company on the water. They are great learning waters, with the fish quite opportunistic to a well-presented fly.
