Situated in Southern Iceland, the East Ranga River is widely considered the country’s leading river for Salmon. During each year’s three-month season, it consistently leads the way in the number of Salmon caught.
It’s not just the huge returns of Atlantic Salmon that make this river ideal for beginners and experienced fly-fishermen alike − it’s also the easy wading and the beautiful scenic surrounds.
It’s additionally located close to Reykjavik, making it the perfect destination for a short weekend getaway from Europe or the United States.
The lodge on the East Ranga is completely equipped to look after the needs of the Salmon angler. The lodge complex comprises 8 buildings including a large veranda Jacuzzi and Sauna. Each of the large lodges has twin-beds and en-suite facilities and each full rod is allocated a separate room. There is plenty of room for all your fishing gear and equipment, and there is a drying room to ensure that your clothing is dry for the next day.
There is a large lounge, bar, and dining area in the main lodge building where gourmet meals are served. There are spectacular views across the outlying fields towards the Helka Volcano – a truly stunning location.
WIFI is available at East Ranga Lodge, but you will need to bring your own laptop or tablet.
The East Ranga is one of the best-known Salmon rivers in Iceland. It is located in the south of Iceland and is a seventy-minute drive from Reykjavik.
For sheer numbers of fish caught, it has ranked either number one or two in Iceland every year for the last ten years. The river is large, and most of it is fished through wading (which is generally trouble-free) using double-handed rods that are 13-15ft 9-11# with both floating and sinking lines.
The fishing suits all abilities and all ages. It is a very popular river so getting on it can be a challenge, and we would advise booking well in advance. The fishing is over nine beats with two anglers allocated per beat with a fair rotation system across its twenty-two kilometres length, and with a maximum of eighteen anglers, there is plenty of room. The river offers a wide variety of fly fishing water from falls pools to long flowing pools.
Most of the fish are in the seven to eight lbs range but, again, each year, larger specimens are caught.
A typical fishing day starts after breakfast at around 8:00 am and you fish until 1:00 pm when you have lunch. You then fish from mid-afternoon through until 9:00/10:00 pm and then head back to the lodge for a freshen up and the evening meal.
You can hire fishing equipment and waders etc. but this would need to be pre-arranged with the lodge. Equally, tuition can be arranged, but please make arrangements before travelling so that time can be allocated specifically for coaching.
