Located in remote Patagonian Argentina, Fly fishing at Estancia Laguna Verde offers the opportunity to fish the famous Lake Strobel, also known as Jurassic Lake. Home to arguably the largest trophy rainbow trout in the world, the stillwater and feeder streams and rivers including the Barrancoso provide sighted fly fishing opportunities with many fish in excess of ten pounds in weight.
The family-run Estancia provides a fantastic atmosphere in which to experience this remarkable fishery with typical Argentinian cuisine, wine and hospitality located on the southern shore of Lake Strobel, with stunning landscapes.
Including access to a host of smaller lakes to fish, as well as private water access, there are numerous locations to target seasonally. With all fishing done on foot wading and polaroiding the edges, you will be transferred around the various locations via all-terrain vehicles, while the journey to get to the lodge is an adventure in itself.
Estancia Laguna Verde is located just by ‘Laguna Verde’ (Green Lagoon), only a cast away from fantastic trout fishing.
The lodge main building is a typical ‘Estancia house’ accommodating up to ten anglers per week. It has seven double bedrooms with two comfortable single beds and private en-suite bathrooms. There is a spacious living room overlooking the Laguna Verde. There is also a satellite TV to keep up to date with the world and a DVD player. The lodge provides a room with a fly-tying desk and library to enjoy when not fishing. There is also a newly built changing room/drying facility located just by the entrance door of the lodge to use before and after fishing.
The lodge also offers visitors satellite and IP telephone and free unlimited WIFI access and a lodge computer. Windmill generators and fuel generators are used as a back-up, ensuring the energy demands of the lodge and providing electricity (220 volts) 24 hours a day. A laundry service is provided twice a week. The staff at the lodge offers friendly and professional attention to create a cosy and hassle-free atmosphere to guarantee our guests have a truly unforgettable experience.
Estancia Laguna Verde and the Lake Strobel fishery has been very well documented, known world-wide for the trophy-sized Rainbow Trout teeming in its waters. The fish in this lake are truly huge and live up to all expectations with the average size of the fish in the lake is seven to nine pounds in weight and fish in the ten to twenty pounds range, very common.
The fly-fishing locations vary to suit the season and weather conditions. The lodge has exclusive access to over fourteen kilometres of the Strobel Lake (Jurassic Lake), ten kilometres of both the Barrancosa River and Moro Creek plus around twelve lakes and lagoons. Fishing in these crystal clear waters whether lake or river is by sight fishing using mostly floating lines and a variety of flies from small streamers and nymphs to skating large foam flies and mouse patterns depending on the week.
The access to a vast amount of water enables the guides to put the anglers right where the fish are or if the weather should be unpleasant then there is always a place to fish that offers some shelter. Being mobile is the key to success in this area, and access to the water is either via ATV Quad Bikes or 4WD vehicles depending on guest preferences.
The fishing is all season long, and fish in good numbers are caught from November through to April.
Whilst there is a wide variety of fishing to be enjoyed the bulk of the action takes place on Lake Strobel and locations such as the famed ‘Monster Bay’ due to the sheer number of large fish that are caught there each season. In recent years accessing the northern shores of the lake has also provided some outstanding fly fishing. All fishing is done on foot, with the lake edges and river banks generally easily accessible. Occasionally guides will use small floatation boats to access certain areas dependent on conditions.
We advise all anglers to bring everything that they will need from rods, reels, lines, jackets, waders and terminal tackle. As per all Fly Odyssey trips, you will be provided with a comprehensive pre-trip guide to assist with your preparation.
Passport with a minimum of six months validity and photo ID to purchase a fishing licence.
