The Estancia Maria Behety is one of the premier and most consistent sea-run Brown Trout fisheries in the world. Located on the banks of the famous Rio Grande, this fine working ranch covering over 600 square kilometres has private access to over 50 kilometres of private river frontage in the lower section of the Rio Grande.
With sea-run trout averaging in excess of twelve pounds, and fish in excess of twenty pounds common the Estancia’s access to over 100 prime pools in the lower reaches makes this one of the best trophy trout locations on earth.
With beautiful historic lodgings catering up to 12 anglers per week and professional guide team, the twelve-week season is in high demand providing an authentic Argentinian experience with fine dining, hospitality and service throughout.
The Estancia has two lodges on the property, with the La Villa Lodge, the most exclusive in all of Rio Grande. Rebuilt in the ’90s to replicate the 1900’s architecture and previous dwelling the discerning lodge is well equipped with 6 rooms, jacuzzi in each, snooker room, conservatory, 4,000 bottle wine cellar and fully stocked bar.
With sweeping panoramic views across the La Pampa lowland plains, the ESB lodge located around 15 minutes from the ranch town is well suited to larger fly fishing groups. With high ceilings, timber beams, and all the conveniences of a premier fly fishing lodge, it has eight bedrooms with two double beds in each, ample storage and bathroom with walk-in shower and bath.
The communal living area has plenty of room to relax by the fire, fully stocked bar and dining room serving meals. Lunch is the main meal of the day, complete with fine wines and desserts, before fishing again well into the evening. WiFi is available, and a 9 hole golf course is also on-site.
The towering shearing shed in the main town on the property is the largest in the world, producing organic Corriedale wool, lamb and Hereford beef the working Estancia, with the building designs from the 1930s providing an authentic style maintained throughout the Rio Grande region.
Accommodation is provided on a 7 night, Saturday to Saturday program.
Fly fishing Estancia Maria Behety is from January through March seasonally, with an average of seventy thousand fish moving into the lower reaches of the system, filling the numerous pools with trophy brown trout.
Fishing two anglers to a guide a vehicle, the pools are accessed on foot, providing very easy to wade sections of river, typically swinging wet flies or dead drifting nymphs. The river is not too wide, with medium 40-60 feet casts covering most of the holding water.
The bilingual guides are all very experienced, and the beats rotated throughout the week over a morning and afternoon session daily, either side of the sit-down lunch and siesta period.
Direct flights are available from Australia to South America via Santiago, Chile or Auckland direct to Buenos Aires in Argentina. Staying overnight in the seductive Buenos Aires you will connect through to a domestic flight the following day to either Rio Grande or Ushuaia.
Travel time on arrival to the lodge is a scenic 45 minutes from the Rio Grande or 3 hours from Ushuaia by private transfer.
Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, the UK do not require a visa for travel of up to ninety days. You will need a passport with no less than 6 months validity from the date of arrival. A stamped arrival card will be issued on completion for up-to ninety days.
