We recently returned from 5 nights with clients Pete and Matt, Fly Fishing for Black Bream throughout Sydenham Inlet, situated in East Gippsland. After a large amount of rain hitting the catchment in the days prior to arriving and a drop in water temperature, the fishing was challenging, however, the guys managed some great captures both on Fly and alternating with hardbody lures over the weed beds when the wind picked up.
The Dusky Flathead at the front of the system had been fishing very well in the weeks prior to our arrival, however, we soon found that all the rain had developed a one-meter deep freshwater wedge. This displaced many fish much deeper including the flathead, moving them off the flats and shutting them down for several days.
Good numbers of feisty Black Bream were landed in around 2 meters, using shrimp patterns on intermediate lines, while some good fish were also landed on grubs from the back of the boat while alternating from the single fly-fishing position on the casting deck. This method worked very well for the guys ensuring fish were landed for both of them throughout each day.

Yellowfin Bream, Silver Trevally, Pinkie Snapper, and Australian Salmon were also landed, while out in the lake, the guys managed some great Black Bream that were starting to school up in deeper water prior to the winter months ahead. With a large number of Prawns in the system, early morning and evenings provided some surface action with surface flies such as Disco Shrimps enticing plenty of Tailor which are quite prolific in the system at the moment.
The guys had some very memorable sessions, with reels screaming, laughter, and high fives all around over the last two days when the system settled down after all of the rain and the fish were back feeding readily. Days on the water consisted of dawn starts and dusk finishes, with plenty of time over the lunch break back at the lodging for a siesta and to recharge for the evenings ahead. As with all of our hosted trips to Bemm River, all meals are provided in our private lodging, including a night at the local pub, and the opportunity to land a large variety of species on the fly with a very experienced and knowledgeable guide.
We have just released some available dates later in the year if you are looking to get away, learn and fish one of Australia’s finest Estuarine systems.
