Imagine fishing for huge Steelhead in crystal-clear waters with no crowds…that is what the Suskeena Lodge offers. The lodge is located in remote Canadian wilderness on the Sustat River and is one of British Columbia’s finest Steelhead lodges.
The wild solitude provides a great backdrop to some of the largest Steelhead in the world with captures in excess of 30lb’s not uncommon in the Sustut river system, accessible only by aircraft, with world-class wilderness experiences, accommodation and hospitality that are second to none.
With its panoramic mountain views and real crackling fireplace; Suskeena Lodge caters to 9 anglers per week, swinging double handed spey rods on exclusive river beats.
The lodge caters for nine anglers staying in twin-occupancy log cabins with en-suite facilities, a log-stove, and a sitting area. In addition, there is an additional shower block with three showers and facilities, should there be a rush for the shower. These cabins are very comfortable and the rooms have plenty of storage space and drying facilities close to the stove. All cabins have a small front porch ideal for getting your gear on and off in the morning and evening as well as checking tackle.
These cabins complement the main lodge where you take your meals and enjoy a beer in front of a big open fire after a day’s fishing, all set within secluded forested wilderness close to the river. Meals are delicious and designed to sustain outdoor activity. They are served with a selection of wines.
Please note there is no beer in the lodge and all guests are advised to bring their own.
With no road access, the lodge is reached via a private charter from the nearby town of Smithers.
WIFI is available in the lodge but bring your own laptop or tablet.
This is a fishing lodge for those wanting to catch big Steelhead and up until recently, it has been the venue for the select few ‘in-the-know’. If you want to increase your chances of hooking an elusive 30 lb Steelhead in crystal clear water, then this is the place to head to as the Sustat has the largest average Steelhead of any river in the Skeena system.
Anglers at Suskeena Lodge fish three to a jet-boat or drift-boat with one guide. The guides stay on the same beats each day and the guests progress through the beats with each allocated guide.
The Sustat has three beats and there is one beat on the main Skeena River. The lower beat on the Sustat and the beat on the Skeena are regarded as the same beat. Each group of three anglers fish together for each day and are advised to remain together.
Skate dry flies or swing heavy tubes using double-handed rods is a popular method to tackle these waters. Rods in the 7-9# range are ideal with a choice of heavy tips to get the fly down.
The Sustat River is a real jewel and a best-kept secret except for a few hardcore Steelheaders, hence there are few anglers. The water is very clear and is generally one of the last rivers to become un-fishable in poor weather. The Steelhead are thick shouldered and very strong, a perfect build to survive the winter in the river.
A typical day starts after breakfast when you meet your guide and head off around 8:00-8:30am and fish through until 1:00pm. Lunchtime is usually an informal meal at the riverside – soups, meats, breads and salads. You get back to the lodge around 5:30pm and then get ready for a beer and the evening meal at 7:00pm.
Regulations dictate that on the Sustat River, only single-barbless hooks can be used and all Steelhead are ‘catch and release’.
Fly direct to Vancouver and take a one-hour evening flight to Smithers. Stay overnight and then take a fifty-minute charter-flight to the lodge the next day.
