Located on the banks of the Motueka River, Stonefly Lodge is an excellent hub at the top of the South Island. From the lodge, fly-fishermen can easily access the numerous rivers of the Nelson Lakes and Murchison region − renowned for its large Brown Trout.
There are also plenty of opportunities for multi-night camp-outs as well as helicopter fly-out trips to the more remote rivers on the West Coast.
Luxury accommodation is provided with four guest rooms, each with spectacular views from private balconies overlooking the Motueka River and beyond to the Mt Arthur Range in Kahurangi National Park. All rooms are equipped with private en-suites, writing desk, luggage storage, hairdryer, heated towel rails and bath robes. The guest-rooms are in two wings of the building enabling the rooms to be quite remote from the main activities area on the ground floor. A wireless internet connection is available throughout the lodge, including in the guest-rooms and the lodge offers an iPad which can be used in the guest-rooms for in-house entertainment if required.
Breakfast can be served on the guest-room private balconies if required.
You can relax after an enjoyable day exploring one of the National Parks and indulge in a private massage in your room by one of the local massage therapists/beauticians. For the non-fisher there are countless activities to do from hiking, horse riding and mountain biking to coastal charters rafting and heli-tours.
The cuisine is freshly made from the extensive garden using home-made produce, local quality meats and fresh seasonal seafood—simply inspired and delicious. Special diets are easily catered for.
Complete with library, a snooker table, and the ‘Matai Bar’, guests will have the ideal setting to relax after an exciting day’s fly fishing or after exploring the numerous sites and attractions of the local region. The upper landing area above the dining-room provides a quiet secluded place which can be used for fly-tying, to access the guest computer or to indulge in a game of chess or relax with a good book before retiring to your accommodation.

This region offers dozens of rivers and streams to choose from, With an average Brown Trout catch-size of four to five pounds, catches of over eight pounds are quite common and the chance of a Trophy ten-pound Brown Trout may only be a cast away.
The wide choice of rivers available from Stonefly Fishing Lodge allows guests of all abilities to experience some amazing fly fishing – from relatively gentle-flowing easy-access rivers to more adventurous back country streams. The location offers a wide choice of river catchment systems enabling the fly fishing guides to pick the most appropriate fly fishing destination according to the various flow rates at a particular time of year.
Within an hour’s drive, guests can access dozens of quality fly fishing streams and rivers within the Nelson Lakes and northern Murchison region. With the aid of a helicopter, dozens more fly fishing locations become available to guests at Stonefly Fishing Lodge targeting the ever assertive wild Brown Trout.
Stonefly Fishing Lodge can be a base for many different fly fishing experiences and we can offer guided two- and three-day excursions to some spectacular remote locations in high country waters in the region which involve overnight accommodation in DOC (Department of Conservation) huts.
All sleeping gear, safety gear and meals are catered for. Access to the start of the excursions can be by road, boat or helicopter depending on the location chosen and all packages take you into some of New Zealand’s most pristine wilderness fly fishing environments.
These trip options access very remote waters with the lure of exceptional fly fishing experiences, however, a moderate to high level of fitness is required according to the various flow rates and weather conditions at a particular time of the year. Fishing is usually by walking and wading and can involve some hiking. Rods in the 5-6# 8’6 -9ft are ideal. Layered clothing is the best approach. Whilst there is gear at the lodge that can be used, we would advise all fishing guests to bring all the gear they are going to need #0151rods, reels, lines, flies and leaders down to 2lb and use the waders at the lodge. Clothing should blend and allow for a stealthy approach.
Passport with minimum six months validity and photo ID to purchase fishing licence.
A tourist visa is required for all citizens (except Australians) entering New Zealand. A three-month tourist visa is provided by passport control when entering the country.
There are various international flight options to Wellington, Auckland or Christchurch. Then take an internal flight to Nelson. The transfer to the lodge is by helicopter.
