Located just a stone’s throw away from Yellowstone National Park’s northern border, Hubbards Yellowstone Lodge is a great family-run ranch that offers incredible views over Paradise Valley and the meandering Yellowstone River.
From the lodge, anglers have excellent access to Yellowstone’s renowned trout-streams. There are also private water opportunities on the 26,000-hectare property, including spring creeks such as DePuy’s, Armstrong and Nelson’s.
In addition to fishing, the ranch has a horse riding program in place, plus there’s great sightseeing and wildlife viewing to be enjoyed in Yellowstone.
The lodge is perched high on the hill overlooking the Yellowstone River valley and surrounded by mountains and on the shores of Merrell Lake – a great place to drift boat fish for Rainbows and Browns.
The timber-built lodge provides a great family atmosphere. Apart from fishing, the lodge has a great horse riding program where you can experience first-hand the life of a Montana cowboy and help in rounding up the cattle. The dining service is first-class. At the end of a week fly fishing at Hubbard’s Yellowstone Lodge you will leave feeling like you are part of the family. Hubbard’s Lodge is made up of four lodges. The main lodge has six guest-rooms and the sister lodges have twelve twin-rooms, each with their own private facilities and plenty of room to store gear and equipment. All the rooms have a mix of views across the nearby pastures, lakes and Yellowstone River.
The main lodge has a dining area, a lounge and a bar where you can relax. The food is gourmet, and there is plenty of it. Perfect for a day outside whether horse-riding, rafting or fishing. There is plenty of room at Hubbard’s Lodge to spread out and enjoy yourself.
Fly fishing in Yellowstone National Park is an awe-inspiring experience. Hubbard’s Yellowstone Ranch is located in a unique position on the northern border of Yellowstone National Park and thus has access to the famous rivers and streams that flow through the park. The Firehole, Madison and Gibbon offer the unique experience of casting at rising Brown Trout while being surrounded by Buffalo, geysers and spectacular surroundings.
During the summer months, when the Hopper season provides outstanding dry-fly fishing, Soda Butte and Slough creeks offer the chance of twenty-inch-plus Cutthroat, and this is just the fishing inside the park. On the ranch property itself, there is the spring-fed Merrell Lake, Tom Miner Creek and the opportunity to horse-ride into the hills and fish on untouched alpine lakes. But some of the finest fishing is still to be had while undertaking a float trip down the mighty Yellowstone River or testing your skills on the huge Trout of the famous spring creeks all located within an easy drive of the lodge.
There is equipment at the lodge which guests can use for those travelling light. However, we would advise all anglers to take their own waders, rods, reels, lines, terminal tackle and flies.
Rods and tackle in the 4-5 weight range are adequate. Dry flies, nymphs and streamer patterns all work and Yellowstone is famous for its Stoneflies and Drakes and as the season progresses Hoppers, ants and beetles. But the fishing is predominantly Dry fly. A floating line works for most situations, but it’s always worth carrying a sink tip line with you. With literally thousands of miles of water to fish, you will be spoilt for choice. You can float down almost fifty miles of the Yellowstone, or for the more adventurous, you can even hike to the Grebe or Cascade and target Grayling.
Wading is generally trouble-free and the fishing is very productive. The river is populated with Cutthroats, Rainbows, Browns, Grayling and Brook Trout. Most fish are in the fourteen- to the seventeen-inch range, with larger specimens caught each year—around twenty to twenty-four inches.
There are various international flight options to the USA. Take an internal four to five-hour flight to Bozeman, Missoula or Butte and then a one to two-hour drive to the lodge.
