Set on a private 16,000-acre luxury estate in the lush central North Island, Poronui is New Zealand’s premier sporting lodge. It’s world-renowned for providing an authentic backcountry experience and spectacular fishing for Brown and Rainbow trout.
Poronui has almost 40 kilometres of its own water and also provides fishing from vast estates of privately owned adjacent land. The exclusivity and remoteness of these rivers and streams make for some of the world’s most prized fishing waters.
Poronui’s fly out experiences ensure access to some of the most remote and pristine rivers, targeting Brown and Rainbow trout on both fly and nymph throughout the season.
The luxury lodge provides a range of accommodation options and wilderness experiences, with fine hospitality, attention to detail, gourmet cuisine, and fine wines to complement your stay. The huge range of additional activities on offer – including horse riding, wine tours, mountain biking, and hiking – make Poronui a great choice for couples and families.
Poronui offers three supremely comfortable accommodation options. The legendary Poronui Lodge is warm and welcoming, with seven individual and luxuriously appointed guest cabins. From the balcony overlooking the river, you can begin savouring the spectacle and the spirit of this special place.
Further afield, the stylish timber and canvas tents of Safari Camp offer a fully-serviced basis for overnight camp-outs. Blake House, situated on an imperious plateau overlooking the Taharua River, is the choice of corporate leaders, celebrities and royalty, providing five-star accommodation in an utterly unique New Zealand location. Whisper-quiet seclusion, luxury and some of the world’s finest food and wine.
Fly fishing from Poronui Lodge provides anglers with the opportunity to sight fish and stalk large brown and rainbow trout in clear backcountry streams only accessible by helicopter. This is the true appeal of the location, with stunning scenery, and access to a number of renowned fly fishing rivers which also run through the estate.
With Helisika located at the front gate, helicopters can easily pick you and your guide up from outside the Lodge or Blake House and whisk you away to the most secluded and idyllic fishing spots.
Pack your lunch and choose to hike back to Poronui or set a time with your pilot and head back to the lodge in style.
Most rivers have clear, deep pools interspersed with surging rapids and cover for the fish to feed from. Some areas offer plenty of native forest cover while others require more stealth and leave no room for error. Unaffected by snowmelt, the rivers open on 1st October each year and offer great fishing to Brown and Rainbow trout.
Fishing during November and December is one of New Zealand’s best-kept secrets. Those ‘in-the-know’ choose this time of year to fish. The days are lengthening, and while the weather warms up, the water is still cool. There can be good mayfly hatches, encouraging the trout to feed recklessly on the surface during the day. This is the least crowded time to fly fish in New Zealand.
January and February are traditionally the most popular time for anglers to visit New Zealand. Streams are low and wading is easy. Trout are highly visible in the water, but selective with their feeding. On smaller streams, these conditions demand careful stalking and delicate presentations with small drys and nymphs. On mountain freestone streams, there is excellent terrestrial activity on the surface.
At Poronui they strive to make your New Zealand fly fishing trip as memorable and as easy as possible. And if you’re looking to catch and release New Zealand brown and rainbow trout in some of the country’s most iconic rivers – then Poronui should be on your list.
