Farquhar Island, located in the outer Seychelles some is one of the great remote experiences in Seychelles. Famously known for its large Giant Trevally, Napoleon Wrasse and Bump-head Parrotfish it has a great diversity of fly fishing opportunities from the flats, reef edge, and Bluewater.
The simple yet comfortable land-based guesthouse on Farquhar offers a great base to explore the large lagoon, inshore reef and Bluewater options catering up-to ten anglers per week in air-conditioned comfort with Wi-Fi now available.
Primary flats species include Trevally, Bonefish, Triggerfish Indo-Pacific Permit, as well as Napoleon Wrasse, Bohar Snapper and many more available from the reef edges. Farquhar also provides some truly exceptional offshore fly-fishing to Milkfish, Sailfish, Barracuda, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna and a host of other reef species easily accessed by boat.
The first part of the season traditionally runs from early October to late December and the second part from late February to early May with professional guide team, and is accessed by a short flight from Mahe.
Farquhar Atoll is the most southerly atoll in the Seychelles chain of islands and lies about four hundred and fifty miles to the south-west of the Mahe. The accommodation was recently re-built in 2017 after a cyclone wiped out much of the island, however, this has now opened up some areas to fly fishing on foot, that was previously hard to access. A comprehensive revegetation planning program was initiated which fisheries research efforts still continue with a number of tagging and DNA projects progressing.
Catering for 10 anglers per week, guests are accommodated in three comfortable duplex style chalets, each chalet containing two separate bedrooms. Each bedroom is fully air-conditioned, has two single beds and an en-suite bathroom. Rooms are equipped with 24 hour 220-volt electricity and have a constant supply of hot water, with limited Wi-Fi now available also.
There is full housekeeping, with laundry done every third day. There is a separate communal air-conditioned dining, lounge and bar area with limited where guests enjoy their meals and relax after each day’s fly fishing. The alcohol available is mostly beer with a few spirits available in the bar. Otherwise, it might be best to bring your own spirits, subject to duty-free regulations.
Meals prepared by the chef are a mix of Creole and international style dishes. An outside undercover dining area on the water’s edge also forms an idyllic backdrop for meals when the weather allows. Menus include fruits, breads, fish, seafood, chicken and pork.
A satellite phone is available for an emergency and guests to use.
The range and diversity of the fishing make Farquhar Atoll a very special location. Easy wading on hard white sandy flats turtle grass and broken coral coupled with deeper reef edges, coral drop-offs has created an environment that is perfect for almost anything to live from good sized Bonefish and Permit to a variety of Trevally species including the brutal Giant Trevally in trophy-size classes.
As seen in the now famous BBC Blue Planet II footage, the GT’s in this part of the world hunt, track and take down sooty tern chicks from both of the ocean’s surface and also in mid-flight with some amazing aerial displays.
In addition to the lagoon, Farquhar also boasts a fine inshore reef and reef edge fishery. With an impressive population of Napoleon Wrasse, Bump-head Parrotfish and Triggerfish while Milkfish, Barracuda and range of reef species such as Emperor and Grouper can be found offshore.
So, whether you prefer throwing a crab to a Trigger, wrestling with a Giant Trevally or casting to a tailing Bonefish in the lagoon there is a lot on offer at Farquhar. Most of the fishing is wading and walking with sight fishing to lots of species. There is a fleet of seven 17-18 foot skiffs which also provide good access to the lagoon and Bluewater areas. The guides are very experienced and will help you with equipment and techniques to ensure you stand the best chance of success. The skiffs have been fitted out to handle both the skinny water of the shallows as well as deeper Bluewater outside the reef edge both in comfort and safety.
Also, if you venture just off the shore in the deeper water then there is a whole new world of fish waiting to test your skills and how much backing you have!! From Yellowfin and Dogtooth Tuna to Wahoo, Barracuda, Giant Trevally, Grouper, Snapper, and Sailfish also available. We would advise all anglers to take their own gear and fishing equipment – Rods, reels, lines flies, good wading boots Polarized glasses and lots of sunscreen
