The Pyrenees region of Spain offers some of the best trout and salmon fishing opportunities in Europe with an unrivalled mixture of ancient architecture, castles, monasteries, and fabulous food and wine.
Located on the sunny side of the Pyrenees, this destination offers anglers the opportunity to combine fantastic fishing with all the culture and scenic beauty this region represents, with a range of detailed and unique fly fishing experiences available.
Including the origins of Spain and the Kingdom of Aragon, Odesa National Park, Canyons of Guara, and the Aigues Tortes National Park.
All Fly fishing trips to the Pyrenees have the flexibility to incorporate numerous accommodation options, angling and non-angling opportunities. Established in 1999, the Salvelinus operation has been providing excellent fishing and accommodation for the travelling angler. There are two primary lodges to choose from, and each one is centrally located in its region to provide access to the best fishing access throughout the season. Both lodges have beautiful rooms and are well equipped and WIFI is available. They provide outstanding Spanish cuisine and are friendly, comfortable and inviting.
This includes the La Jacetania Lodge – a 15th Century stone-built lodge on the banks of the Aragon River in the village of Santa Cilia in the western Pyrenees, and La Ribagorza Lodge which is a charming traditional hotel in the Pyrenees and is the main Salvelinus base of operations, located in the eastern Pyrenees. This lodge has a lovely rustic living-room where you can relax after the day’s fishing and hatch plans for the next day’s fishing adventure. The bedrooms are all comfortable and carry the same rustic theme through. These are either twins or doubles and can be furnished to suit requirements. Three of the rooms have private bathrooms and there is plenty of storage space for fishing equipment and gear. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed, and you can, within reason, choose when you would like your breakfast and evening meal. Lunches can be taken streamside.
Other Accommodation Options
In addition to the two main lodges, Salvelinus can also offer a range of accommodation close to the fishing hotspots throughout the Pyrenees of northern Spain in the regions of Aragon, Catalonia and Andorra.
Explore the rich heritage of northern Spain: unspoilt valleys, monasteries, national parks and peaks up to 9000 feet high, while fishing wild trout waters.
The local rivers to the lodges are considered ‘blue ribbon’. They have been chosen because they offer great fly fishing ease of access and are a very special place to be.
For the more adventurous experience, you can take a Pyrenees tour with your fly-rod form west to east, sight-fishing and stalking for Trophy Trout, or take a remote exploratory either on horseback or via helicopter. The opportunities are endless.
The high mountain streams can produce fish ten to fourteen inches. The middle mountain streams and lower reaches studded with pools flats and runs with trout between twelve to twenty inches. The high mountain lakes that are perfect for sight-fishing from the bank for trout sixteen to twenty-two inches and in the tailwaters and lakes you can hook a Trout of a lifetime, a true trophy fish. Most of the fishing is by walking and wading and access is generally good and the wading safe.
For the Rainbow and Brown Trout a #5 weight rod, 9ft – 9ft 6 covers most situations, though it can be useful to have a lighter 8ft setup, and a heavier 9ft 6 setup as well. Floating line – Dry fly fishing is popular, but Czech nymphing works well on some of the very swift pools.
We would advise all anglers to take their own equipment—rods, reels, lines, waders, boots, etc. De-barbed hooks are preferred and the fishing is all ‘catch and release’.
The lodge can also offer coaching as well as a range of fly fishing courses designed for beginners, intermediates and advanced fly-fishers.
Passport with a minimum of six months validity and photo ID to purchase a fishing licence.
Canadian, British, US, Australian and all EU citizens do not require a Visa to visit Spain.
Fly direct to Madrid or Barcelona and then take a train to Zaragoza or fly to Pamplona. From there, it is a two-hour scenic drive to the river lodge/ hotel.
