With 29 rooms and a wide range of activities on offer for family fun, The Ranch at Rock Creek is one of the best ranches in Montana.
Whether you want to enjoy fly fishing on Rock Creek River (which flows through the property) or ride through pine trails spanning 6600 acres, there’s something for everyone.
Other great family-friendly activities include clay-shooting, archery, hiking and rodeo round outs.
The Ranch at Rock Creek is the ultimate family holiday destination, catering to everyone in style. Located in the mountains of central Montana and set among ten square miles of rugged Montana ranchland just outside Philipsburg, guests experience limitless outdoor recreational opportunities, outstanding accommodation, cuisine and a full-service spa.
Surrounded by meadows, lakes and streams, you will find yourself in a luxury western ranch that has left no stone unturned to provide the ultimate western experience. Be it fly fishing, horse-riding, rodeo, wildlife viewing, mountain biking, hiking or shooting some clays, there is an activity always on offer. Other activities include ten-pin bowling or catch a movie in the cinema.
The fishing in the region is superb. The ranch has five miles of private water on Rock Creek which can be fished with a guide or alone.
Rock Creek gets a superb salmon-fly hatch in June and July which is an experience in itself. There are various meadow streams and forested creeks. The ranch also has numerous spring-fed ponds where Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout abound.
There are various types of accommodation that range from finely fitted out canvas tents on the banks of Rock Creek with private facilities that give that authentic outdoor experience, to themed lodge rooms in the fine granite lodge, to a range of private log cabins/residences to cater for small and large groups.
The dining is an experience in itself with locally-sourced produce and a regionally inspired cuisine such as organic beef, elk, bison, fresh fish, seasonal local fruits, vegetables and fresh herbs, all enhanced by an inspired wine list.
Fishing is on the four and a half miles of private water on Rock Creek as well as on its five spring-fed lakes. The stretch of river is broken down into five beats which are rested to give clients fresh water to fish. Up to eight anglers can be accommodated and the guiding is included in the travel package. There are four resident guides at the ranch and additional fishing guides can be sourced for large groups. The fishing is by walking and wading, except where you go off the ranch and can float on the neighbouring rivers of the Bitterroot, Clark Fork and Blackfoot. Fishing is available on other stretches of the Rock Creek and Flint Creek. The lake at Georgetown is another option about twenty minutes’ drive away and offers wonderful dry-fly fishing.
There is a tackle shop at the ranch and courtesy equipment is available to use. However, we would advise all anglers to take their own waders, rods, reels, lines, terminal tackle and flies.
Rods and tackle in the 3-5 weight range are adequate. Dry flies, nymphs and streamer patterns all work. A floating line works for most situations but it is always worth carrying a sink tip line with you.
Wading is generally trouble-free and the fishing is generally very productive. The river is populated with Cutthroats that make up about half the Trout population, with an even split of Rainbows and Browns making up the rest. There is also the chance to catch a rare Bull Trout as the river holds a small population. Most fish are in the fourteen- to the seventeen-inch range with larger specimens caught each year, around twenty to twenty-four inches.
There are various international flight options to the USA. Take an internal four to five-hour flight to Bozeman, Missoula or Butte and then a one to two-hour drive to the lodge.
