Established in 1982, Tongariro Lodge located on the North Island of New Zealand provides some of the best year-round fly fishing opportunities in the country. Located on the world-famous Tongariro River, it’s arguably New Zealand’s premier winter fishery region with an estimated 80,000 plus fish making the annual spawning migrations from Lake Taupo up into the Tongariro freestone pools each year.
With a diverse fishing program that ranges from backcountry heli-fishing and camp-outs through to drift fishing from rafts, you’ll truly be spoilt for choice including superb dry-fly fishing to large Brown and Rainbow Trout in summer and excellent Autumn and Spring nymphing options.
The lodge provides an excellent guide team, fine hospitality, and a range of accommodation options, while the abundance of nearby rivers and smaller streams in the region and lake fishing on offer make it one of the most diverse and truly great fly fishing experiences in New Zealand.
Tongariro Luxury Lodge is located in beautiful park-like grounds on the banks of the legendary Tongariro River on the southern shores of Lake Taupo, at the foot of New Zealand’s outdoor playground – the world heritage Tongariro National Park. Separate private chalets and villa guest-accommodation are situated within the twenty-two acres of beautiful lodge grounds. There are three accommodation types available for guests, each with private facilities and their own secluded sunny terrace with views of the Tongariro River or mountains beyond. All rooms are serviced daily and include free WIFI. You can choose from a two- to five-bedroom villa, an executive villa with four bedrooms or a one-bed chalet. Facilities include dryer, coffee and tea, fridge and TV
The main building has rustic lounges, comfortable sofas, open fires and Trout-fishing Trophies of the past adorning the walls. There are two pleasant dining-rooms. Non-fishers can also enjoy an all-weather tennis court and a secluded spa pool, rafting, hiking and skiing in the winter. The food and fine wines offered are a mix of traditional and game reflecting the surrounding area.
WIFI is available in the lodge.
The Tongariro Lodge guides provide access to over forty wilderness rivers and three Lakes providing some of the most diverse fly fishing opportunities to target both Rainbow and Brown Trout on the North Island. The annual winter spawning migration brings hundreds of thousands of fish into the local rivers from Lake Taupo, with numerous freestone rivers, pools, riffles, and runs full of feisty well-conditioned fish.
Fishing is accessed by 4WD and there is a large variety of water within a one-hour drive of the lodge, however, for the more adventurous there is Heli-fishing, overnight camp trips, and wilderness raft trips available. These headwaters provide spectacular fishing to trophy brown and rainbow trout, with the summer dry fly season a standout.
Each year Trout of over ten pounds are landed but the average size for Lodge guests is three to four pounds. This area is a truly vast fishery that can provide the Trout fishing experience of a lifetime, all year round to the beginner and the expert alike.
The lodge runs its own rafts, four-wheel-drive vehicles, and boats. Most of the fishing is walking and wading and while in the Spring and Autumn seasons there is access to some of the best backcountry nymphing water providing fish all year round.
We suggest anglers bring their own favourite fly rod and reels, along with rubber-soled wading boots and Goretex waders. Tongariro Lodge guides can provide all flies and leaders and a wide variety of equipment. A weight 5 or 6, 9ft fly rod covers most situations with a 7/8 outfit for larger rivers, lakes, and winter fly fishing. A typical day runs from between 8:30 to 9:00 am until 5:00 pm approx. Lunch is included in the full day and taken streamside. Layered clothing is the best approach. Clothing should blend and allow for a stealthy approach.
Passport with a minimum of six months validity and photo ID to purchase a fishing license. A Visa is required for countries without a visa waiver agreement with New Zealand, including Australian and UK residents.
Various international flight options to Wellington or Auckland are available, with domestic flights available to Taupo. Heli-transfer or private vehicle transfers to the lodge are organised, or you can take a hire car for the 4hr drive to Turangi.
